Apple Is About To Launch Apple Pay In Canada

After the U.S. and the U.K., Apple is about to launch Apple Pay in Canada tomorrow. The news was first spotted by iPhone in Canada. American Express is one of the launch partners, but it’s unclear whether Apple has partnered with other credit card issuers.

As a reminder, Apple Pay was first introduced in the U.S. in October 2014. In addition to adding new banks and points of sales in the U.S., the company has also worked on international expansions. But it’s been a slow roll out as Apple launched Apple in the U.K. in June 2015.

According to The Globe and Mail, Canadian banks don’t want to sign with Apple to support Apple Pay. In particular, Visa and MasterCard are having second thoughts, and Canadian banks issue Visa and MasterCard cards.

Following this theory, Apple is launching Apple Pay with very few eligible people at first in order to educate the market and maybe convince other banks to change their minds in the future. We will find out tomorrow if it is indeed the case.

The company is also probably working on other markets so that it can beat competitors, such as Android Pay and Samsung Pay. Canada is only Apple Pay’s third market — it has yet to launch Apple Pay in the Eurozone for example.
