Apple today announced that its new iPhones will feature new cameras, too. The new 8 megapixel iSight camera will feature a 2.2 aperture that allows for better photos in low-light situations, Apple’s True Tone flash and a brand new sensor. The high-end iPhone 6 Plus will also get optical image stabilization.
The standout feature of this new sensor is the phase detection autofocus, however. A feature that’s usually reserved for high-end mirrorless cameras and DSLRs. This means users get a fast autofocus to allow them to capture better images.
Similarly, the optical image stabilization is typically only found on larger cameras.

In addition to all of this, Apple’s software now features better noise reduction for smoother images in low light and something Apple calls “next-gen local tone mapping.” The cameras will also support a new face-detection algorithm.
Apple says all of this is possible thanks to the new signal processor the company designed for its new iPhones.
On the video side, Apple is adding an improved 240fps video mode for slow-motion videos and — as part of the iOS 8 update — time-lapse videos.
On the software side, the new iPhones will also feature continuous auto-focus, burst selfies and single-shot HDR photos.
