Netflix Confirms Plans To Expand Into Six European Countries By Year-End

Netflix announced yesterday its plans to expand its operations in Europe, launching in six new countries by the end of the year. While it was widely expected to bring its streaming video service to France and Germany soon, it will also be expanding to Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg later in 2014.

Netflix first entered Europe with a launch in the U.K. and Ireland in 2012, and has been gradually expanding to other international markets over time. The planned expansion in Europe would make its low-cost streaming service available in 50 countries worldwide, most of which are wrapped up in Latin America.

The company charges about $9 a month for unlimited, on-demand viewership of older TV shows and movies, as well as a growing number of exclusive and original titles. With 35 million subscribers in the U.S., the company is looking to new markets to propel its growth going forward.

Potential customers in those markets can sign up on the company’s website to be alerted when Netflix becomes available in their area.
