Groupon Buys Software Development Startup Obtiva

Groupon has just announced its acquisition of Obtiva, a Chicago based Ruby on Rails firm.

From the always humorous Groupon blog:

“We’re constantly impressed by how capable Obtiva developers are and we’re really looking forward to expanding the team. If you’re interested in a job in Engineering at Groupon (or a host of other departments, including Housewares and Linens) check out the open positions here.

If you’d like to send a congratulatory gift to the Obtiva team, they’re registered at Crate ‘n Barrel and Radio Shack.”

Earlier this morning we reported that Groupon competitor LivingSocial was also picking up the acquisition steam with the ~$50 million acquisition of Turkish eCommerce company Groupfoni. While Obtiva’s agile software development services don’t seem to fit in to any particular acquisition strategy, a good guess it the acquisition was primarily a way to get good (and local) front end engineering talent.
