Chinese Media On The Google Situation: Nothing To See Here, Move Along

As you’ve probably heard by now, Google is making good on its threat to stop censoring search results in China. Today, the company switched their Google.cn domain to redirect to their domain in Hong Kong where they will serve up the new, uncensored results. Not surprisingly, the news is making headlines worldwide. In fact, even China is covering it. Well, they’re devoting two sentences to it, at least.

Xinhua, which is the official press of the People’s Republic of China, has a story about the redirect on its site. The 39-word story (the English version, anyway) offers nothing beyond some very basic, limited information. In fact, I’ll just copy all 39 words below:

SAN FRANCISCO, March 22 (Xinhua) — Google Inc. on Monday said users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk.

The U.S. Internet company said in a blog posting that it intends to continue R&D work in China and also to maintain a sales presence there.

Well, okay. There you go. Citizens of China, you have your news, now please go on with the rest of your day.

Update: Here’s a bit more from Xinhua, complete with the headline, “Indifference, uncertainty cloud Google’s China threat.” In it, it’s reported that 84% of over 27,000 citizens said they “don’t care” about Google potentially pulling out of China.
